My first impression of Zines was that it would be challenging because I had heard of what zines are but had yet to see one done, so my overall outlook was distant from the thought. After a more in-depth close look at them, Zines are short-story telling books comprising many versions of ideas and stories that may or may not speak to someone interested in a particular genre of Zines. But in a sense, Zines don’t have a genre because they mainly focus on a broader outlook of attracting readers—this weird graphical idea of how Zines are crafted and portrayed as a book exists. Zines should be a book regardless because they are telling such a unique tone story or just dull information.
I have noticed many connections to other forms of books when researching Zines. Children’s books are like Zines because, given the size and pages of a Zine, I believe a Zine is supposed to be short and just give a more fast-paced read when viewing it. As critical judgmental readers, we must provide some appreciation of the fact that Zines can e either strongly relate to us or give some insight or excitement. It is a creative writing and art style. I feel books like this aren’t rare but rare because many people aren’t interested in Zines or making unless they are being told to do so. I think I would create my Zine based on something I generally like based on my hobbies.
Hello,
To be honest, I have never heard of Zines before this class, but I think the process of making one has made me value books just a little more, and especially because of your statement about them being focused on a new zone of creativity that is meant to appeal to the traditional book audience.
Hi Kehinde, I heard of Zine before and thought it was a very tedious process, however just watching the videos that demonstrate how they are made help me to have a different opinion. I really like the fact that you can create something personal and sharing it with others. Zines is much shorter in comparison to books. Creating a Zine helps tell a story. Zines have their audience, but one might not see the demand easily because there might be a specific amount distributed, based on who created it. It is flexible because one can choose any topic which needs to be highlighted.
Kehinde,
I like the reflection of audience here and what makes Zines special — they are often rare in the sense that you can usually only find them in a few places, but not so rare as to have only one copy, for sure. It’s interesting to think about format as well — although most Zines are codex-like, they don’t necessarily have a given size (some are quite small, while others are larger, and most are few pages long).
