ENG 410: Digital Book History
Blog #8

Blog #8

In advance of our in-class workshop, please watch the first five videos on this playlist. You should try to follow along on our Scalar book and create sample pages of content to practice. Once you’ve done this, answer the following questions:

  1. What part of using Scalar felt easiest, or most intuitive to you? Why do you think that was?
  2. What part of using Scalar felt most difficult or confusing? Were you able to resolve the problem, or are you still stuck?
  3. Of all the features covered in the videos, which are you most excited to apply to your project?
  4. Finally, try to map out the pages and paths you will need to build in our workshop next week:
    • Consider what kinds of images, links, and annotations you may need to draft (keeping in mind images need to be their own pages, same for annotations).
    • Make a list of what kinds of information you need to gather and/or write up (e.g. introduction, sources, metadata)
    • List the kinds of layouts you may want to include in your project
    • Draft your table of contents, including any subsections that branch out from other pages
  5. Optional: add any questions you have about how to create content on Scalar

All blogs are due before midnight the day before class (Tuesday). Aim to respond to at least 2 peers before class begins (~5:30pm) so we can be ready for engaging discussion.
